Air Quality Research is a new research area in the Metropolia University of Applied Sicences (former Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia), Department of Technology and Communications. The objective is to study traffic pollutants in city air by a mobile laboratory "SNIFFER" (Nuuskija in Finnish). SNIFFER was designed and built in the Laboratory of Automotive Engineering with co-operation of the Laboratory of Physics as a part of the LIPIKA project. LIPIKA project belongs to the technology program FINE (Fine particles - Technology, Environment and Health) by the National Technology Agency TEKES.

In 2005 the measurement set up of SNIFFER was extended to include also measurements of non-exhaust particles during a Finnish national project VIPEN (Vehicle Induced Particulate Emissions from Non-exhaust Sources) by Tekes. Road dust emissions are sampled behind the left rear tyre through a conical inlet and the mass concentration of particles below 10 micronmeters is monitored.

Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences

Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is the biggest univeity college in Finland. There are 14 000 students in four different fields of study, the biggest of which is Technology and Transport.

» SNOOP project 1.9.2009-31.12.2012
The first measurement campaign by Sniffer in the harbour areas in Katajanokka, Helsinki (19-29.1.2010), and in Turku (2-12.2.2010) .

»20.4.-10.5.2008
Sniffer measures road dust in Halle, Germany, during the FOPS project.

» 6.-17.2.2006
Sniffer in Germany. Laboratory experiments by engine dynamometer in MAN, Nurnberg, during the LIPIKA project together with the Max Planck Institute. The engine was a EURO IV heavy duty diesel and the main measured parameters were particle number concentration and size distribution as well as concentrations of ions and sulphuric acid.

Road dust measurements (VIEME-project) were performed by Sniffer in Espoo

» 8.-24.8.2005
Sniffer was chasing two diesel passenger cars with different after-treatment techniques in Alastaro, Finland. Laboratory experiments by chassis dynamometer in Helsinki Polytechnic were performed by using the same engine loadings.
